Russia’s 2014 occupation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula has been branded as illegal
A Wikipedia representative called the request to remove the article “vague”
Action intensified when the views of the Putin government did not correspond to the interpretation of any event

Moscow. The war between Russia and Ukraine (Russian-Ukrainian war) has been going on for a long time. The Russian government is very upset by the information disseminated on this subject. In fact, the Moscow court has again fined Wikipedia for refusing to remove a Russian-language article related to the attack on Ukraine. This is yet another measure taken by the Russian government to prevent fair reporting or criticism of the war and to hinder the Russian public’s access to information.

The court fined 2 million rubles ($24,464) on the Wikimedia Foundation, a non-governmental organization that maintains a free, publicly edited online encyclopedia, for failing to remove a Wikipedia article titled “The Occupation Russian from the Zaporizhzhya region”. . Many countries have condemned this action by Russia and called Russia’s occupation of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula in 2014 illegal.

State news agency Tass said the Wikimedia Foundation ignored requests from Russian communications watchdog Roskomnadzor to remove articles containing “misinformation”. ‘Tas’ said a Wikipedia representative asked the court to reject the request to remove the article, calling it ‘vague’.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has recently stepped up his crackdown on criticism and factual reporting that does not match his government’s views and interpretation of events.

This is not the first time that Wikipedia has been fined for refusing to remove “erroneous information” about the war in Ukraine. Earlier last week, the same Moscow court fined the Wikimedia Foundation 800,000 rubles for failing to remove material related to a song by Russian band Psychia, considered extremist by Russian authorities.
