The White House has said President Joe Biden will host the September 28-29 meeting of leaders of Pacific island nations in Washington. This is yet another attempt by the United States to reduce China’s growing influence in the Pacific region.

According to a Reuters news agency, the White House said the summit will be held with Pacific island nations on climate change, epidemic response, economic recovery, maritime security, environmental protection and promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific. Pacific, will advance efforts to broaden and deepen U.S. cooperation on big issues like this. A Joe Biden administration official said the White House had invited 12 Pacific nations, including the Solomon Islands. The Solomon Islands signed a security deal with China in April, prompting concerns from Washington about Beijing’s growing influence.

The Solomon Islands changed course on the Taiwan issue in 2019. After that, it became the focal point of growing competition between China and America in the strategically important region. The United States invited Micronesia, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Samoa, Tonga and Fiji as well as the Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau and Tuvalu. that Taiwan is one of its 14 diplomatic allies.

However, the White House did not give information on the countries which agreed to be present at the summit. In August, US Under Secretary of State Wendy Sherman visited the region. During this visit, the Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands, Manasseh Sogaware, did not take part in an event commemorating the Second World War. America increased its attachment to Pacific Island nations during Joe Biden’s tenure. The United States has also announced its intention to open embassies in the Solomon Islands, Kiribati and Tonga.
