Moscow. The Russian Defense Ministry announced on Saturday that it was withdrawing its troops from two areas in eastern Ukraine to Kharkiv. Retaliation by Ukraine since last week has forced Russian forces in the region to retreat. News of the Ukrainian army gaining a clear lead in southern Kharkiv, the country’s second largest city, could turn into another major success for the Ukrainian army in the war. He had achieved great success in foiling the Russian attempt to seize the capital Kyiv at the start of the war.

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said troops would be redeployed from the Balaklia and Izium regions to eastern Donetsk, according to the AP news agency. Izium was a major base for the Russian army in the Kharkiv region, and videos shared on social media earlier this week showed residents of Balaklia cheering as Ukrainian troops arrived in the area. The troop withdrawal claim to focus on Donetsk parallels the pretext given by Russia earlier this year to withdraw its forces from the Kyiv region. Then the Russian army had failed to capture the capital Kyiv.

While earlier on Saturday, Ukrainian officials claimed a major victory in the Kharkiv region, saying their troops had cut off the Russian military’s vital supply line to Izium. It was also claimed that the town of Kupiansk had been recaptured from Russian troops, a town located on the supply line of Izium. The British Ministry of Defense said on Saturday that Ukrainian troops had advanced 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of Kharkiv. The Russian army is increasingly isolated around Izium. The British Army said the loss of Kupiyansk would have a huge impact on Russian supply lines.
